Syrian Rue, also called Wild Rue or Esphand is renown in the Middle East as an incense, spice and medicinal herb and the seeds are used to produce a rich red dye. Egyptian studies found that extract is markedly fungicidal and bactericidal, due to harmine mostly. As an incense and spice, it is repoted to act as an abortificant, narcotic, aphrodisiac, stimulant, sedative, emmanagogue, emetic, vermifuge, and soporific. It is also reported to be used in India for syphilis, fever in North Africa, as well as hysteria, malaria, neuralgia, parkinsonism, prolapse of the womb, rheumatism, colic, asthma, and eye complaints.
In some cultures the incense is believed to keep away evil spirits and protect one from the evil eye. The seeds produce a rich thick smoke and are often added to other fragrant plants and spices in incense mixtures.
Syrian Rue is also widely known as a psychoactive stimulant.
